Mission

kids with dogs in khayelitsha

Our mission is to RADICALLY reduce the number of unwanted puppies and kittens born into communities that are unable to support and care for them, by providing a FREE sterilisation service to the residents of those communities.

S.A MAST firmly believes in being proactive, focusing on the cause of the animal over population epidemic and the transformation of areas in crisis via the application of a consistent maintenance, management and education program.

Focus

  • FREE Mass Sterilisation
  • FREE De-worming
  • FREE Inoculations
  • FREE Skin disease treatment
  • FREE Collection and return of animals to and from their homes
  • FREE Education and empowerment
  • FREE Reduction of disease and the transfer of infection from animals to humans

Where?

  • Khayelitsha, Western Province, the 2nd largest informal settlement in South Africa
  • Estimated 100 000 cat and dog population
  • Estimated 1.6 million human residents

Why Khayelitsha?

  • This is an extremely poor and under serviced area;
  • with no previous applied animal population control measures in place;
  • containing tens of thousands of breeding cats and dogs with no access to medical treatment, sufficient food and shelter.
  • These animals present an ongoing health and safety risk to the area’s human population (particularly those infected with HIV/AIDS);
  • Violence towards, and abuse of, stray or neglected cats and dogs is on the increase in this area and this has been documented.
  • We aim to promote humane education, particularly amongst the youth of Khayelitsha;
  • and our activities are already stimulating job creation in the community.
