Operational sustainability

Individuals and private businesses who fund our programme by debit or stop order have allowed us to fund on average 83 sterilisations per month, but it is our goal to increase this number to 500 sterilisations per month by December 2009. This would total 6,000 sterilisations per year at an average cost of R250 per cat or dog. This service includes de-worming, inoculations, tick, flea and mange treatment. On average, it costs R800 for a sterilisation treatment at a private clinic.

Our financial model focuses on renewable funding

The bulk of our funding must therefore be consistent, with a designated monthly and yearly operational budget, realised by the commitment of donors prepared to donate an amount of their choice each and every month. This type of funding lends stability and sustainability to the programme.

Once-off donations

‘Block’ funding or ‘once-off’ donations are reserved for structural additions to our clinic, new equipment purchases, special events and humane education.  Once the sterilisations clinic is fully operational and self sustaining, our dream is to build an adjacent veterinary clinic on to the existing sterilisation facility.

Operating according to sound business principles

Our focus is not just to help out if and where we can, but to actively and consistently transform a community.  This will require a long term, goal orientated plan, in partnership with committed sponsors and donors.

Return on your investment is immediate and tangible

Every single sterilisation procedure translates into:

  • an immediate reduction in Khayelitsha’s animal over-population crisis;
  • and the detrimental impact this crisis has on the physical and mental health of the community;
  • the alleviation of the terrible suffering of thousands of cats and dogs

An average of 5000 animals are euthanased and disposed of every month in the Western Cape alone, but this figure only represents a very small percentage of the actual number of cats and dogs whose condition is so diabolical that they would have to be euthanased if exposed to veterinary intervention.

A great deal of money is spent each year on rescuing, treating, rehabilitating and euthanaising animals in the Western Cape.  As long as mass sterilisation is not recognised as a critical means of intervention, these costs will simply continue to multiply exponentially.
